Print Prep & Production
Appealing to both tourists and local residents alike, Balboa Park Magazine reinvigorated a decades-old San Diego landmark by bringing it's vibrant stories to readers. Imagining the publication from scratch, San Diego Magazine produced the magazine for San Diego Tourism Authority as a way to bring more interest and visitors to the park.
As the art director for this project, I led the design from masthead to production including; sourcing imagery, managing photographers/ illustrators, acting as a liaison between Balboa Park cultural institutions, scheduling photoshoots/ interviews, producing the design and final print production for the magazine.
Masthead
A masthead was chosen that connects with Balboa Park's traditional
logo mark in favor of of more modern designs that were presented.

Color
Defining color for a magazine is distinct from developing a brand palette. The palette needs to be flexible and allow for the content in the magazine to take the lead, rather than the brand of the publication. A wide color palette with various shades in each color group gives the magazine flexibility to evolve.

Fonts & Styles
Various headline, body copy and display styles were created before the project began and applied throughout the publication to create consistency.
