Print Prep & Production

Appealing to both tourists and local residents alike, Balboa Park Magazine reinvigorated a decades-old San Diego landmark by bringing it's vibrant stories to the readers of the magazine. Imagining the publication from scratch, San Diego Magazine produced the magazine for San Diego Tourism Authority as a way to bring more interest and visitors to the park.

As the art director for this project, I led the design from masthead to production including; sourcing imagery, managing photographers/ illustrators, acting as a liaison between Balboa Park cultural institutions, scheduling photoshoots/ interviews, producing the design and final print production for the magazine.

Masthead

A masthead was chosen that connects with Balboa Park's traditional
logo mark
in favor of of more modern designs that were presented

Color

Defining color for a magazine is unique from defining a brand palette. The palette needs to be flexible and allow for the content in the magazine to take the lead, rather than the brand of the publication. A wide color palette with various shades in each color group gives the magazine flexibility as it evolves.

Fonts & Styles

Various headline, body copy and display styles were created before the project began and applied throughout the publication to create consistency.
